Bread pudding
Bread Pudding is a classic dessert that’s warm, comforting, and a great way to use up leftover bread. Here's a simple and delicious recipe for a traditional bread pudding:
Classic Bread Pudding
Ingredients:
-
4 cups cubed stale bread (any kind of bread you have, like white, brioche, or challah)
-
2 cups whole milk (or any milk alternative like almond or oat milk)
-
2 eggs
-
½ cup sugar (you can use brown sugar for a richer flavor)
-
1 tsp vanilla extract
-
1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional, for spice)
-
¼ tsp ground nutmeg (optional, for extra warmth)
-
Pinch of salt
-
1/3 cup raisins or other dried fruit (optional)
-
2 tbsp butter (plus extra for greasing the baking dish)
For the Sauce (optional):
-
1/2 cup heavy cream (or milk)
-
2 tbsp butter
-
2 tbsp sugar
-
1 tsp vanilla extract
-
Pinch of salt
Instructions:
-
Prepare the Bread: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish (about 8x8 inches) with butter. Cut the bread into cubes (about 1-inch) and place them in the greased dish. If the bread is very fresh, toast the cubes lightly in the oven for about 5 minutes to dry them out.
-
Make the Custard: In a bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
-
Combine: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing the bread down slightly to make sure all the cubes soak up the liquid. If you're using raisins or other dried fruit, sprinkle them over the top. Let the bread sit for about 10-15 minutes so it can absorb the custard.
-
Bake: Dot the top of the bread pudding with small pats of butter. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the pudding is set, golden brown, and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
-
Make the Sauce (optional): While the bread pudding is baking, you can make a quick sauce. In a small saucepan, melt the butter and sugar over low heat. Stir in the cream and vanilla extract, and cook until warmed through and slightly thickened, about 3-4 minutes. Keep it warm to pour over the finished bread pudding.
-
Serve: Once the bread pudding is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. Drizzle with the warm sauce if desired, and top with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for extra indulgence!
Tips:
-
Customizations: You can add chopped nuts (like pecans or walnuts), chocolate chips, or even a splash of bourbon or rum to the custard for extra flavor.
-
Make Ahead: You can prepare the bread pudding ahead of time and refrigerate it overnight. Just bake it when you're ready to serve.
Bread pudding is perfect for brunch or dessert, and the warm, custardy texture is always a hit.
